Dear Participants dear Spectators,
You are certainly aware that orienteering is a discipline born and alive thanks to nature. The fascination of running or walking trough the forest or open fields with a map renders orienteers respectful for nature and its conservation.
The organisation is conscious that such a large event could cause great repercussions on the surroundings and the landscape and has therefore decided to partially concentrate the organising and economic efforts in the safeguard of nature and the reduction of negative impacts the event could cause on environment and landscape.
In order to reach these objectives, a project for the “environmental tutoring of the event” has been worked out. This foresees various actions (measures) in the field of rubbish collection, transportation, consumption of energy, choice of products, flora protection, and so forth.
To make these measures efficient, the collaboration of everybody is required, from volunteers to participants and spectators!
Some examples on how you can contribute to the safeguard of the environment during the competition week:
- avoid dispersing rubbish in the surroundings and clean the terrain before you leave if
- contribute to the separate rubbish collection, following the instructions affixed at the numerous collection points
- avoid wasting energy and water
- respect staff instructions (parking, soil utilisation, forbidden areas, etc)
- use public transportation organised by the promoter
- respect natural protected natural areas (forbidden zones) during the competition and at the arrival zone
- support local manufacturers by buying their gastronomic products
These are just a few of the possibilities you got to give your own contribution. During the event you will have the possibility to see other ones, some of them being very pleasant, involving and original! The brand you see at the top of this page was created especially for this project and will accompany you through the whole competition week, calling your attention to the respect of environment.
To crown the engagement the organising committee of JWOC and 5 giorni Svizzera 2005 decided to candidate to PRIX ECOSPORT, organised by Swiss Olympic with the collaboration of the Swiss Agency for the Environment, Forests and Landscape (SAEFL).
Prix Ecosport rewards the organising committees of sport’s events particularly involved in environmental issues in sport activities (see www.prix-ecosport.ch for further information).
At this time our event is one of the 10 organisations reaching the finals for winning this price. With your help, we therefore hope to reach a prestigious result also in this “environmental race”
Thanking you in advance for your precious contribution, we remain
The responsibles of the eco project
